A Runner's Story...

orn with cerebral palsy, Paul Rockwell had long dreamed of running the Boston Marathon. He got a first hand view growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. So enthused, Paul would take the train and memorize the course.

Minor obstacles like not being able to walk until he was 6 years old never deterred him. Neither did numerous surgeries and countless hours of rehab at Children's Hospital in Boston. Nor did a year of training, logging 60 miles per week.

When asked about his experience, Paul often replies "I thought I could," an adage from the book
The Little Engine That Could he now reads when he speaks to school children. "I never knew I could touch so many people the way I have with my story. I never realized the effect it would have."

In order to qualify for the Boston Marathon, Paul needed to take part in another Marathon first and to finish in under 8 hours. In a letter to the staff of the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon Paul wrote:

"I did not see the sun until I got past downtown going South and fell at Mile 20. When I got to McCormick Place I knew I could do it. I fell again at Mile 25 but could see the finish. Crossing the 26-mile mark I felt great and started to sprint. The cheering was great. When I crossed the finish line I saw that I had completed the race in 7:38:38."

Paul has since run the Boston Marathon in just over 7 hours and 31 minutes. In the minds of most people, running 26.2 miles requires a Herculean effort. On forearm crutches, this is truly a spectacular feat.

Congratulations Paul, from everyone at Walking Equipment Inc. and Walk Easy Inc.
